The Fisheries Research Group coordinates QuanTech's Large Pelagics Survey (LPS) for the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS). The primary purpose of the LPS is to collect data needed for generating estimates of both the recreational fishing effort directed at large pelagic species and the recreational catch of Atlantic Bluefin Tuna. The estimates developed from this data are used for monitoring of the Atlantic Bluefin Tuna fishery. A secondary goal of this survey is to collect catch data for other highly migratory species such as billfishes, sharks, and tunas other than Bluefin Tuna.
