Coffee Roaster: Mon-Fri, 30-40 hours a week

The Roaster is someone who holds a great deal of technical knowledge and skill, as well as an eye for detail and quality with the desire to hone the craft and artistry of coffee roasting. This position is responsible for the entire roasting process, from bean selection, to determining and maintaining the perfect roast profile consistent execution, maintaining freshness and proper distribution of the product. This is a full-time position with no direct reports.

We have a need for a Coffee Roaster crew member for our high-volume production, providing coffee beans for all of our Flying Star and Satellite Coffee Cafes. Wage DOE starts at $23+, with a clean and friendly workplace, full time hours, and benefits.

Qualifications/Skills:

+2 years’ Coffee roasting experience is preferred, but training on our machines and processes is provided. The company utilizes

on a Probat L25 and Probat L12.

Understanding of coffee bean origins, flavor profiles, and roasting techniques. Familiarity with cupping and sensory evaluation.

Ability to operate and troubleshoot roasting equipment. Basic mechanical skills for equipment maintenance.

Computer capable with MS Outlook and Flexibake (our operating system)

High level of organization, attention to detail and follow through, strong time management skills.

Strong planning skills and proactive ability to anticipate challenges.

Positive attitude and willingness to step up and help others.

Heavy lifting is a daily part of the roasting role, repetitive motions in a loud production facility.

Mechanical aptitude, high attention to detail.

Must pass a background check.

Food safety training, required.

Minimum 30 hours per week, Monday through Friday with early morning start times.

Experience in food manufacturing systems development and implementation

Excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills (verbal and written)

Ability to work effectively with all levels of the organization.

Self-starer and driven while primarily working independently.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to maintain focus while working in a busy, open warehouse area with frequent interruptions.

Ability to work independently with limited human contact.

Extensive standing without breaks.

Exposure to heat, smoke and cold.

Reaching heights of approximately 4-6 feet and depths of 2 ½ - 3 ft.

Must have high level of mobility/flexibility in space provided for periods of up to 8 hours or longer as needed.

Must be able to work irregular hours under heavy pressure/stress during busy times; bending, reaching and walking.

Carrying products weighing approximately 50 lbs for distances of up to 60 ft.

General Responsibilities:

Production of consistently roasted coffee beans using recipes created for the gas fired drum roaster; Probat L25 and Probat L12.

Operate and maintain coffee roasting machines, adjusting time, temperature, and airflow to achieve optimal roast profiles (e.g.,

light, medium, dark roasts).

Product inventory - maintaining inventory counts, forecasting needs, working with Purchaser to obtain crop samples, and

making buys.

Develop and refine roast profiles to highlight the unique characteristics of different coffee bean origins, ensuring alignment with

company standards or customer preferences.

Collaborate with a small group of cuppers to achieve best flavor profiles and the company’s pallet. Ability to update recipes as

needed.

Quality field assessments – café quality control visits with tools to gauge water pH values, brewer function, etc. Creates reports

for owner and café manager.

Consistent and meticulous attention to detail as it relates to quality control; takes immediate action as necessary.

Filling, weighing, packaging, sealing, organizing, maintaining par levels for on hand roasted coffee.

Fully responsible for product quality and recordkeeping– dating, rotation, proper wrapping, storage of ingredients, products that

are finished and in process.

Works with Kitchen and Bakery management team members to dispatch beans, track inventory and waste.

Maintains bearings, greasing, required maintenance schedule of the roaster, calls tech or maintenance team for complex issues

that might interfere with roasting schedules.

Unloads and organizes green coffee shipments.

Operates Manual Forklift obtains certification.

Daily, weekly, monthly cleaning tasks of the roasting area.

Adherence to SQF (safe quality food) food safety protocols

Conducts daily cleaning, temperature, and compliance inspections accurately.

Communicates, takes action to correct any cleaning, sanitation or maintenance issues that may arise.

Assists in the development, execution, and sale of coffee to the public through e-commerce.

Performs other duties as assigned or requested.
