Wednesday–Friday: 8:00am–5:00pm

Saturday: 8:00am–4:00pm

Broad Function

The Kennel Staff Attendant is responsible for providing daily care, enrichment, and sanitary maintenance for animals housed at the Broome County Humane Society. While the role focuses primarily on canine and kennel duties, the attendant will also provide coverage in feline intake and isolation areas on Thursdays, as well as assist with general animal care throughout the facility.

Additional duties may include helping promote adoptable animals through local media outlets, businesses, and community partners.

This position requires a compassionate, adaptable individual who can work effectively both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced shelter environment.

Job Duties

Animal Care & Enrichment

Walk, train, and socialize dogs of all sizes, breeds, and temperaments.

Provide enrichment, handling, and socialization for cats, including those in intake and isolation areas.

Feline Care Attendant

Feed, medicate, and provide fresh water to animals following established protocols.

Observe animals for signs of illness, stress, or behavior changes and report concerns to senior staff.

Cleaning & Sanitation

Clean and disinfect kennels, cages, cat rooms, and related areas.

Sweep, mop, take out garbage/recycling, perform laundry and dishwashing tasks, and maintain overall facility sanitation.

Customer & Volunteer Interaction

Introduce dogs and cats to potential adopters and assist with meet-and-greet sessions.

Collaborate with volunteers assisting in canine and feline areas.

Veterinary Assistance

Assist veterinary staff with restraint, handling, and administering treatments as needed.

Media & Outreach Support

Assist with photographing, filming, or presenting animals for local businesses, news/media outlets, and social platforms to help promote adoptable pets.

Qualifications Required

High school diploma or GED.

Ability to adapt to changing situations and work effectively under pressure.

Self-motivated, dependable, and able to work both independently and within a team.

Physically able to handle and lift up to 50 lbs.

Must provide reliable personal transportation.

Candidates are subject to a drug test.

Preferred Experience

Previous experience in a shelter, kennel, farm, veterinary clinic, pet store, or related animal care environment.

Experience working with dogs and cats of varying temperaments and medical needs.

Willingness to learn—training will be provided for the right candidate.

Other Information

Potential risk of dog or cat bites/scratches and rare exposure to zoonotic diseases, including Rabies.

A current tetanus vaccination is recommended before employment.
