The mission of the Max Higbee Center is to provide community-based recreation programs for youth and adults with developmental disabilities. Our activities promote social, physical, emotional, and cognitive growth and development of our members. By engaging in MHC programs and activities, our members also achieve greater independence in their lives and increased involvement in the community.
The Program Activities Coordinator is an essential member of the Max Higbee Center team. This person will support and implement activities for our established Weekend Program as well as support staff, members, and families in their program engagement through activity coordination for group programs under the general supervision of the Program Director.
This is a new position at Max Higbee Center, and the ideal candidate will work closely with the Program Managers and Program Director to develop and document the roles and responsibilities of this position.
Reports To: Program Managers
Expected Hours: Average of 35 hours per week; a minimum of 32 required. It will be required to support the Weekend Program on Fridays and Saturdays from 4:30 - 9pm, as well as to attend all staff meetings twice monthly on Wednesday afternoons.
Compensation: This is a coordinator-level position with a pay scale of $20.50 - 23.50 per hour. New hires typically start at the bottom of the range and are eligible for annual pay and cost-of-living increases. Paid time off is provided per Max Higbee Center’s PTO Policy, and health insurance is offered to full-time staff. Essential Job Functions include, but are not limited to:
Create and help maintain a welcoming, inclusive, safe, and respectful environment.
Comply with all Max Higbee Center policies and procedures to ensure member safety and organizational compliance with legal requirements.
Help prepare and lead in-house activities and community outings with minimal supervision while ensuring overall group safety and accommodating varying abilities.
Assist with organizing and cleaning the facility. Coordinate third-party cleaners.
Solicit member feedback and ensure member goals are incorporated into program activities, including regular consultation with the MHC Member Advisory Board
Lead Weekend Program activities, including providing as-needed staff support and encouraging member engagement.
Submit activity plans monthly to the Program Managers for inclusion in the calendar and newsletter, including communicating activity needs, expectations, and related logistics.
In collaboration with the Program Managers, support the coordination and planning of activities with community partners as needed, including outreach to members, staff, community partners, and administrative logistics such as transportation plans.
Write, monitor, and follow up with staff notes and incident reports, contact families for support when needed, and follow and enforce member support plans.
Support staff with current community partner events and special events such as the monthly Art Walk, Fair Day, and member-requested events.
Make referrals to Program Managers from outreach efforts and disseminate information to increase and improve partner offerings, including providing detailed notes to ensure activity success.
Support staff in performing their duties in programs through instructions, being available for questions, and offering regular feedback.
Demonstrate and maintain appropriate boundaries with members and support members in creating appropriate personal boundaries and relationships, both at programs and in the community.

Required Qualifications
Supports Max Higbee Center’s mission and values.
Strong written and verbal communication, organizational skills, and time management.
Ability to enter and maintain accurate data and have familiarity with Word and Excel.
Ability to work in a dynamic environment.
Must be able to pass a background check.
Must be able to provide physical mobility assists to members who use walkers, wheelchairs or are blind/vision impaired.
Must be able to walk with a 5-10 pound backpack for 2 - 3 miles to support community outings.
Desired Qualifications
Previous nonprofit experience.
Previous experience supporting and empowering people with developmental disabilities.
Proficient with basic computer navigation, including applications such as GSuite, Canva, information management databases, etc.
